Media, Self, and Society
Scholars Program
What is It?
The program discusses how different formats of media affect our lifestyle. From social media, to newspapers, and TV news, we learn the effects that media has on society and how it impacts our lives. It is a class to be taken for all majors, as media affects every facet of life, whether your a business major, engineering major, or anything in between.
Professor: Alison Burns
What I Learned
Even as a business major, media plays a role in my everyday life. We specifically discussed how advertisements can sway a buyers decision in one way or another. We analyzed multiple Super Bowl commercials and discussed how effective their message would have been received by the consumer. Something as little as a 30 second commercial or a billboard on the side of the highway can influence a consumer to invest in that business or product.
Completed Projects
Aside from the business aspect of media, we covered other media mediums overall. We learned how companies can monopolize an entire industry as well as multiple competitors in a single media landscape. We discussed how wording and phrasing of headlines can reach many different audiences. This can often lead to political divide amongst other disagreements.
